This afternoon I was online proscrasinating on facebook- but in a healthy way, by talking about music:)- with a friend. Inspired by the travels that he has taken part in, I wandered through his albums, longing for the trees and seas that made themselves very apparent in the photos. One picture inparticular jumped right out at me. In it, he was wearing a stone that was carved into a whales tail, around his neck. I immediately commented on it, considering the closeness that I, myself, feel to that symbol. For years I expressed an infatuation with whales, and was fairly close to tattooing this image on my body. When people asked me “why?” I had my answer very carefully thought out to ensure people that there was good reasoning to my desires. Although I never did wind up having that super glued on my side, I hold tight to the philosophy that backed up my wanting it in the past. To me, the concept of a whale tail encompasses life. When you look at a picture of this, you see the tail, graceful in all of its power. We see the tail but we don’t see anything else, although we know that if we followed the tail into the water, something much larger would follow; the whales body. So let me liken this to human beings. We can only see so much of someone, but we know there are a host of traits and quirks and stories that come along with this person. There is depth underneath what is visible. And to make the concept even larger- it is the same for the world and our lives. We can only see or focus on a certain scope at one time, although there is always so much more to conceptualize. The photo of the whale tail, for me, is about focusing on what is in front of you or what is directly presented to you. This picture is a reminder for me to be thoughtful in the moment. And alot of the time I do need a friendly and subtle reminder.
